Point Zéro

Point Zéro des routes de France is the point from where all the distances from Paris are calculated and it's located right in front of Notre Dame, on the Ile de la Cité.

One of my favorite books mentions two legends connected to this particular spot. The first one goes that every person who stands on the bronze compass rose is destined to come back to the City someday. The second invites you to make a wish whenever you visit it so that it might grant it.
You will also see people throwing cents at it or twirling on it on their heels for good luck, or both at the same time and risking their necks while spinning on a 5 cents coin: everyone has his own way to approach to Point Zéro. Personally, I think the idea of coming back once more is way more poetic and less dangerous.

I was in Paris last March and though I did already know I wanted to move here, I couldn't imagine it would happen so fast! As my first wish was granted, I got back to this spot again today and wished for a little more. No coins or twirls though!

Uno dei miei libri preferiti indica due leggende legate a questo luogo particolare. La prima vuole che ogni persona che passi sopra la rosa dei venti in bronzo sia destinata a ritornare a Parigi un giorno o l'altro. La seconda invece invita ad esprimere un desiderio ogni volta che lo si visita perché si possa realizzare.
In realtà, vedrete anche gente che ci lancia monetine sopra, o che gira tre volte sui propri talloni per portarsi buona fortuna, oppure entrambe le cose nello stesso momento, rischiando l'osso del collo facendo una giravolta sopra una moneta da 5 centesimi: ognuno ha il proprio modo di accostarsi a Point Zéro. Personalmente, credo che l'idea di poter ritornare un'altra volta sia molto più poetica e meno pericolosa di altre versioni.

Ero a Parigi il Marzo scorso e sebbene sapessi già di volermi trasferire qui prima o poi nella vita, non avrei mai immaginato sarebbe accaduto così velocemente! Dato che il mio primo desiderio è stato esaudito, sono ritornata anche oggi in questo posto magico e ho desiderato ancora un po'. Nessun centesimo o giravolta, però!
