House-hunting 1.0

This year I have decided not to commit myself to write a blog entry daily, I'll try and post as much as I can of course, but as a general rule, I will proceed for topics whenever I have some update or tips for you.

So anyways, HOUSE-HUNTING.
When moving to a new Country it's always best to get as many pieces of advice as possible from people who live or have lived there. Obviously, the best would be if you could speak to somebody who lived in the same City you are moving to.
This is how I came by this website, particularly helpful if looking for a room in a shared apartment in France. It's easy to use and navigate and as I was still at home, it gave me a good perspective of what was on the market and a good feel of the "competition" I had to find a room to rent in the french Capital.

Be on the lookout for scammers
Unfortunately, the whole internet has access to this website, and as much checked and supervised as it can be, you should always be careful and wary of the people you talk to, especially if only through emails. I learned this the hard way when I thought I had found a very good room in a fantastic location and turned out to be a fraud.
Luckily, I realized it was a scam just in time to stop any contact with these people and not lose a dime, but the level of organization of these criminals (I think I will use this word to describe them) is astounding: I even exchanged some emails with my supposed roommate-to-be!!!

There are some "signals" that should tip you off of a possible scam and the website is well organized enough to send you a reminder, further to having a dedicated page on the matter. For example
- when there's no way to reach these people on the telephone,
- when they ask you to transfer a big amount of money before "sending" you the apartment's keys,
- when organizing a visit to the apartment seems impossible.

It follows that, generally, house-hunting is a lot easier and safer once you are in town and are able to contact your potential flatmate over the phone, talk to them directly and set a visit of the apartment to get to know each other as well as double-cheking the information and pictures in the advertisment.

Quest'anno ho deciso di non impegnarmi a scrivere un post ogni giorno, anche se comunque cercherò di scrivere il più possibile; quanto piuttosto di postare per argomenti e aggiornarvi qualora avessi qualche novità o consiglio.

Perciò cominciamo, CERCARE UNA CASA.
Quando ci si trasferisce in un nuovo Paese è sempre bene tentare di raccogliere il maggior numero di suggerimenti e informazioni da persone che vivono o hanno vissuto lì. Ancora meglio se si tratta della tua stessa città di destinazione!
È in questo modo che ho trovato questo sito, molto utile per quanto riguarda la ricerca di una camera in un appartamento in condivisione in Francia. È facile da utilizzare e intuitivo nella navigazione e dato che ho iniziato ad interessarmi dall'Italia, è stato molto utile per darmi un'idea di che cosa offrisse il mercato e della "competizione" che avrei trovato per cercare una stanza nella Capitale francese.

In guardia dagli scammers
Sfortunatamente, dato che qualsiasi persona con la possibilità di collegarsi a internet ha accesso al sito, bisogna sempre stare attenti alla gente con cui si parla e si entra in contatto, soprattutto se le comunicazioni avvengono solo in maniera scritta. Si tratta di una lezione che ho imparato anche io, quando pensavo di aver trovato una buona camera in un'ottima location e invece il tutto si è rivelato essere una truffa.
Fortunatamente me ne sono accorta prima che potessi perdere un solo centesimo ed ho interrotto qualsiasi tipo di comunicazione con i criminali (credo che sia il termine appropriato per questa gente). La cosa più scioccante, se mi credete, è però il livello di organizzazione che c'è dietro a queste cose: mi avevano addirittura messo in contatto con la mia "futura coinquilina". Incredibile.

Ci sono alcuni segnali che dovrebbero farti scattare un campanello di allarme e il sito è così ben organizzato da mandartene un promemoria due o tre giorni dopo l'iscrizione, oltre che ovviamente avere una pagina interamente dedicata. Per esempio
- se le comunicazioni con il proprietario/coinquilino avvengono solo tramite emails o messaggeria istantanea
- se vi viene richiesto il pagamento di una somma di denaro notevole con un trasferimento di soldi tipo Money Gram prima che vi vengano "spedite" le chiavi
- se fissare una visita all'appartamento risulta pressocché impossibile
in questi casi è molto probabile che si tratti di vere e proprie truffe.

Ne consegue, dunque, che la ricerca di una casa risulta più facile e un po' più sicura una volta in cui si è arrivati sul posto e si possono contattare i proprietari direttamente al telefono, parlarci in diretta e stabilire un appuntamento per visionare la camera, conoscersi a vicenda e controllare che le informazioni e le foto dell'annuncio corrispondano alla realtà.
