Day-trip to Amiens

Do yourself a favour and visit as many places as you can nearby Paris, that's what a friend of mine told me before I left.
And here I am!, just got back from a little trip to the region known as Picardie and in particular to the city of Amiens.

I chose to visit Amiens because my high school friend Martina is studing there for her Erasmus program and even though we don't see each other regularly in Italy, when you find yourself abroad you do want to catch up with people you know, regardless if you haven't seen them in a while. This is how, in the late afternoon of Sunday I jumped on a north-bound train.
Trains are very convenient for the Paris-Amiens journey: it takes less than a hour and twenty minutes from Paris Gare du Nord, and for the round trip ticket I paid only €28.

In Picardie I spent an evening and a whole day yesterday and I enjoyed so much my time! Obviously it was great to see again Martina and hear about her new life as étudiante (this term translates only into "university student". For the general word "student" in French we say élève) in Amiens; but I truly enjoyed my exploring of the city on Monday!

Amiens is well know for its beautiful and huge Cathedral dedicated to Notre Dame (Our Lady): it is the biggest gothic cathedral in the whole of France. La Cathédrale is truly beautiful and not at all as dark or gloomy as the famous Notre Dame of Paris. I would have loved to visit its towers, but you can only do that with a guide at 3:45 PM every day, except on Tuesdays.

Saint-Leu is the district of the old city: it is full of many small canals, colored houses, flowers, restaurants and pubs. I loved walking in the different little rues and discovering pretty spots as well as tasting one of the specialties of the cuisine Picarde: les ficelles, cheese gratinéed savoury crêpes with ham, mushrooms and bechamel sauce. Delicious!

I also loved the visit to the Hortillonnages, very peculiar and unique floating gardens that locals use to grow their vegetables as well as a summer patch, where to set sunbeds and se the barbecue. For as little as €6, you can enjoy a 45 minute visit on a small boat through the canals of the hortillonnages. Definitely worthwhile as it is not something you see everyday and the guides are knowleadgeable and fun. You can access the Embarcadero from Boulevard de Beauvillé. Every Sunday, till 1:00 PM, opposite Quai Bélu, the owners of these floating gardens organize a proper "street" market with their fresh products on the water, or at least, that is what they used to do originally: sell their vegetables directly from their boats!

Lastly, after a small tour to the Hotel de Ville and the Beffroi (clock tower typical of the Picardie and north-eastern regions), I headed to the Maison de Jules Verne, yes, the very author of Journey to the Center of the Earth or Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. It wasn't exceptional, but nevertheless, very well kept and the section dedicated to the machines described in Verne's novels was thoroughly interesting.

I highly recommend Amiens for a short weekend away from the City. i will definitely come back closer to Christmas, as they tell me they have very pretty Christmas markets.

For drinks: Baobar, Place du Don.
For food: Tante Jeanne, rue de la Dodane. But truly, all the restaurants on the Quai Bélu seem really nice - at night time the atmosphere is awesome!

Notre Dame d'Amiens

Mi raccomando, viaggia e vedi i dintorni di Parigi!!!, ecco quello che un amico mi ha detto prima che partissi. Ed eccomi qui, appena tornata da un piccolo giro nella regione della Piccardia, e più precisamente nella città di Amiens.

Ho deciso questa meta piuttosto che altre, perché la mia compagna del liceo Martina sta studiando proprio lì in Erasmus e anche se in Italia non siamo solite uscire spesso insieme, quando si è all'estero fa sempre piacere ritrovarsi con chi ha condiviso così tanto con noi. Così è successo che Domenica pomeriggio io prendessi un treno diretto a nord.
I treni collegano benissimo le città di Parigi e Amiens: in meno di un ora e mezza da Paris Gare du Nord si arriva alla stazione principale della città piccarda e il biglietto di andata e ritorno l'ho pagato solo €28.

In Piccardia, quindi, ho passato una sera e una giornata intera e mi è piaciuto un sacco! Ovviamente è stato bellissimo rivedere Martina e sentire i suoi racconti sulla vita da étudiante (studentessa di università, il termine generale "studente" in Francese si traduce élève); ma anche visitare la città lunedì è stato bellissimo!
 

Notre Dame d'Amiens

Amiens è conosciuta soprattutto per la sua famosa cattedrale dedicata a Notre Dame (alla Nostra Signora): si tratta della cattedrale gotica più grande di Francia. La Cathédrale è davvero un edificio imponente e magnifico, ma a differenza dell'omonima chiesa parigina, questa non è per niente scura o tetra all'interno. Mi sarebbe piaciuto anche visitare le torri e avere la panoramica della città, ma c'è una sola visita al giorno e parte alle 15:45 dal piccolo negozio sulla sinistra dell'entrata. (Non ci sono visite il Martedì).

 Saint-Leu corrisponde al quartiere della città vecchia: è pieno di piccoli canali, case colorate, fiori, ristoranti e bar carini. Mi è piaciuto davvero molto girovagare tra le varie viuzze e scoprire gli angoli più pittoreschi, oltre che ovviamente assaggiare una delle specialità della cucina tipica piccarda: les ficelles, delle crêpes gratinate, ripiene di prosciutto e funghi e annegate nella besciamella. Deliziose!

Les Hortillonnages

Ho anche adorato visitare gli Hortillonnages, gli orti galleggianti tipici di Amiens, dove la gente locale coltiva le proprie verdure ma si ritrova anche in estate per prendere il sole e fare un barbecue. Per meno di €6 si può visitare il sito a bordo di una piccola imbarcazione attraverso i vari canali degli hortillonnages. A mio parere, vale assolutamente la pena visitarli quando si è ad Amiens, soprattutto perché non è una vista molto comune e le guide sono preparate e divertenti. L'imbarcadero è accessibile da Boulevard de Beauvillé. Ogni Domenica, fino all'una di pomeriggio, i vari proprietari degli orti si trovano di fronte a Quai Bélu per vendere i propri prodotti al Marché sur l'Eau, il mercato sull'acqua, in passato i coltivatori vendevano la verdura direttamente dalle loro barche!

Per finire, dopo una visita rapida e solo dall'esterno dell'Hotel de Ville e del Beffroi (la torre dell'orologio tipica dei paesi Piccardi e delle regioni del nord est della Francia), mi sono diretta verso la maison de Jules Verne, sì, proprio l'autore di Viaggio al Centro della Terra e 20 000 Leghe Sotto i Mari: non una cosa eccezionale, ma comunque tenuta molto bene e la sezione dedicata alle macchine descritte nei libri di Verne è stata molto suggestiva.

Amiens la consiglio vivamente, soprattutto per un weekend lontano dalla Città: di sicuro ci ritornerò sotto Natale perché mi dicono che la ville si trasforma completamente e si riempie di mercatini natalizi.

Per mangiare qualcosa: Tante Jeanne, Rue de la Dodane. Anche se in realtà, tutti i ristoranti della Quai Bélu sembrano buonissimi e con un atmosfera super!
